A state task force is working to come up with a publically funded universal health care system. According to WABI, doctors, medical groups, and citizens are helping to fund the State Task Force on health care coverage for all of Maine. They have  about $7,000 of the roughly $9,000 needed for its work. Under the proposal, individuals must be able to choose between the public option and private insurance coverage.

The idea of a 34 unit rental property on a corner of the old Statler mill site has some neighbors on Maple Street worried it might be too much for the quiet neighborhood and narrow street. According to centralmaine.com the Augusta Housing Authority is hosting a public meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Augusta City Center so people can learn more.

Investigators have updated the number of firearms they found in the hotel room and home of the Las Vegas shooter. They found 23 firearms in the Mandalay Bay hotel room of Stephen Craig Paddock and 19 firearms at his home in Mesquite, Nevada. Investigators believe Paddock was the sole shooter. A total of 59 people died and hundreds more were injured when a gunman opened fire onto 22,000 people below.

Gas prices in northern New England are still on their way down in northern New England. The latest survey from GasBuddy shows average retail gasoline prices in Maine fell 6.3 cents per gallon in last week, averaging $2.51 on Sunday. In New Hampshire, the price was $2.56 per gallon, down 3.4 cents from the previous week. The price in Vermont was down 2.2 cents in the past week, to 2.64 per gallon.

Thousands of people lined a beach in Maine to watch 15 small planes land on the sand _ a stunt modeled after aviator Charles Lindbergh's surprise landing in Old Orchard Beach in 1927. The Sunday afternoon event was organized by 15-year-old Chase Walker to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

A jury awarded a Maine couple $500,000 after finding a hospital was negligent in the handling of their stillborn fetus. The Portland Press Herald reports a jury recently awarded Michael and Katie Smith, of China, $500,000 in damages in the medical malpractice suit. The jury found that MaineGeneral Medical Center and a pathologist were negligent in 2013 when they took a tissue sample from the Smith fetus.

Fishing regulators will decide in November whether it's time to reopen Maine's shuttered shrimp fishery. An arm of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission plans to meet on Nov. 29 in Portland to determine specifications for the 2018 fishing year. The fishery was shut down in 2013 amid concerns about poor reproduction and declining population.

Maine Game Wardens say a hunter has been struck in the face with buckshot, and they're looking for two men who fled after the shooting in Gorham. Wardens say the victim, a 55-year-old Casco man, was hunting pheasant when he was shot Monday morning. He survived.

A Maine man has pleaded not guilty to charges of trying to murder a sheriff's deputy during a Maine shootout with police. Forty-year-old Scott Allen Bubar of Brunswick was shot during the shootout at a mobile home in Belgrade. Sixty-five-year-old Roger Bubar, Scott Allen Bubar's father, was killed by police who returned fire in the shootout.

Democrats are calling for tougher gun restrictions after the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas, while Republican-backed legislation to loosen gun rules faces an uncertain future. GOP leaders had been upbeat about bills to ease regulations on gun silencers and allow people with concealed-carry permits to take their weapons to other states — but now, no votes on either bill are scheduled.

Rock superstar Tom Petty has died at age 66. Spokeswoman Carla Sacks says Petty died Monday night after he suffered cardiac arrest. Petty was known for such hits as "Free Fallin,'" "Refugee" and "American Girl." The Gainesville, Florida-native with the shaggy blond hair and gaunt features drew upon the Byrds, the Beatles and other musicians he loved while growing up in the 1960s. He was usually backed by his longtime band the Heartbreakers.
