In the  AP news today, a new residency program at Maine Medical Center hopes to grow the number of doctors in the state who are dedicated to helping Mainers avoid disease. A spokesman for the American College of Preventive Medicine says it's the only one of about 70 preventive medicine residencies in the country to put a special focus on "plant-based medicine."

DHHS is getting federal funding to bolster preparedness and response to the Zika virus.The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded more than $175,000 to the state. The Obama administration recently shifted about $500 million from fighting Ebola to address Zika, a virus that causes severe birth defects.

Maine's annual bear hunt is getting closer as hunters get ready to drop doughnuts in the woods to lure the animals into the line of fire. Maine's bear hunt takes place in the late summer and early fall, but hunters can start placing bait in three weeks, on July 30.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says it has charged four people from Maine and Connecticut with dealing heroin throughout Kennebec County. Authorities say 28-year-old Michelle St. Laurent, of Winthrop, is charged with aggravated heroin trafficking due to the amount of heroin seized, which was 76 grams.

Democratic Attorney General Janet Mills says a state commission intentionally violated the law by excluding the public from an April meeting. Her office on Friday filed a civil complaint in Maine district court seeking an up-to $500 fine against a blue ribbon commission tasked with reforming public education funding. A court appearance is scheduled for July 25 at Augusta district court.

Maine's legislature won't hold public hearings this year into the conduct of undercover game wardens after a newspaper reported on tactics including providing alcohol and encouraging poaching. One legislator says lawmakers lack the stomach to question law enforcement in an election year. The warden service's commander has said his department doesn't intend to investigate allegations of misconduct.

From the Associated Press, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mississippi and Hampton Roads, Virginia are just some of the locations where protesters gathered Sunday to speak out against last week's police shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota that killed two black men. In Virginia, hundreds of demonstrators marched across the six-city Hampton Roads area. Up to 40 protesters were arrested in Baton Rouge.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown says the man who allegedly killed 5 officers and wounded others taunted authorities during two hours of negotiations, laughing at them, singing and at one point asking how many officers he had shot. Brown told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that suspect Micah Johnson had larger attack plans and had enough explosives to inflict greater harm. Johnson was killed. The assault happened during a peaceful protest Thursday against recent police shootings of black men.

A brush fire in the Santa Susana Mountains north of Los Angeles is nearly 50 percent contained, and officials say it's no longer threatening residences. Crews took advantage Sunday of calmer winds and built a perimeter around the blaze that consumed about 1.7 square miles. About 2,000 people were evacuated Sunday and were allowed to return after nightfall.

Two campers have been arrested for allegedly starting a wildfire that destroyed three homes and three buildings in Boulder County, Colorado. Authorities say Jimmy Andrew Suggs and Zackary Ryan Kuykendall, both from Alabama, face felony arson charges because of the dangers the fire poses. Authorities tell the Denver Post that the men left a poorly extinguished campfire, forcing evacuations of nearly 2,000 people southwest of Boulder.
