Augusta police say a 3-year-old girl has been located after an Amber Alert that included the first notifications on cellphones as well as notifications on local TV channels. Police say the youngster, Lenore Wilson, was believed to be with an Augusta woman who occasionally cares for her. (Associated Press story  & Additional info from centralmaine.com)

A man on Upper Narrows Pond in Winthrop says he emergency whistle on his life vest is probably what saved him. According to centralmaine.com , he capsized and calling for help, but the whistle is what got the attention that brought help. He could not swim to shore because of a shoulder injury.

The election is about a month away and voting in Maine and many states is already getting started. According to centralmaine.com, more than a dozen states allow early voting or absentee ballots.

Maine will receive $9 million in federal aid to help students with disabilities prepare for college and employment. The money is going from the federal Department of Education to the Maine Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal by a Maine man who was stripped of his right to a court-appointed attorney because he couldn't get along with five previous lawyers. The court declined to hear the case on Monday. Joshua Nisbet is serving seven years in prison for robbing a convenience store.

Nearly a day after Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti with 145 mph winds, the full extent of the damage is unknown because of extremely difficult travel conditions and downed phone lines. The interior minister says many, many homes were lost. A U.N. official says more than 10,000 residents remain in shelters. Matthew's center has moved beyond the eastern tip of Cuba and is taking aim at the Bahamas. Forecasters say it's expected to be very close to Florida's east coast on Thursday night.

After getting very little attention, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine have shared the spotlight in their one and only debate. Republican Pence outlined a detailed conservative agenda on tax policy, entitlements and immigration. Democrat Kaine pushed aggressively for Pence to defend controversial statements by Donald Trump.

Federal investigators hope to acquire useful information from the data and video recorders on a New Jersey commuter train that crashed last week. National Transportation Safety Board investigators are analyzing the devices to obtain speed and braking information. Another recorder in the rear of the train wasn't functioning during Thursday's crash. One person was killed and more than 100 were injured.

Authorities say they've shut down a sophisticated sex trafficking operation with the arrests of about a dozen people in cities across the U.S. The ring brought hundreds of women from Thailand under fraudulent visas. They were forced to work as prostitutes to pay off tens of thousands of dollars in bondage debts. The ring is said to have operated in cities, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Washington and Dallas.

Two children have been injured in a drive-by shooting in Cleveland. Police say shots were fired into a home from a vehicle Tuesday night, wounding a 3-year-old and 9-year-old who were inside the home at the time. Police say the 3-year-old was shot in the face and the 9-year-old was shot in the back. Their conditions were not immediately available.
