Gov. Paul LePage says his grandmother would've washed his mouth out with soap over some of the things he's said, and he pointed out that even "bad words" are protected by the Constitution. LePage said his grandmother, if she'd been around, would "have a bar of soap, make me chew it, but it's still protected speech."

A Skowhegan Middle School educator is the 2017 Maine Teacher of the year. Reading intervention teacher Tammy Ranger learned of the award at a special assembly Thursday attended by her husband, three adult children, mother, and mother-in-law, along with students and teachers.

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills says a proposal to legalize marijuana for recreational use will have the unintended effect of making pot legal for children. Mills told WCSH-TV that the referendum to legalize marijuana for adults 21 an older removes the existing legal language that makes possession of small amounts of marijuana a civil infraction for both adults and children.

The former Waterville High School principal accused of asking an 18-year-old student for sex has surrendered his teaching certificate in exchange for dismissal of a criminal charge. Reiter's lawyer said meant little to his client because Reiter "has zero plans of teaching again."

President Barack Obama says most Republicans aren't like Donald Trump and "know better," but hadn't renounced the kind of rhetoric Trump embraces. Campaigning for Democrats in Ohio Thursday, Obama said he gives no credit to Republicans who are now disavowing Trump because they had "stood by silently" for so long.

More than 10,000 people packed an arena in Cincinnati Thursday night to cheer wildly for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. While Trump devoted most of his morning rally in Florida to defending himself against the sexual accusations that have rocked his campaign, he made no mention of them at the Ohio event. Several women have come forward to claim Trump sexually assaulted them or made unwanted advances. Trump has denied the accusations.

Bermuda's government has sent out crews to clear roads and engineers to inspect infrastructure as the British territory moves to recovery quickly from Hurricane Nicole. Heavy rains and wind dissipated Thursday night, but authorities are asking people to stay indoors for their safety. National Security Minister Jeff Baron says there's significant flooding in some areas and severe road damage.

Forecasters are expecting the remnants of a typhoon to hit the Northwest late Saturday. The National Weather Service says if the storm sticks to a worst-case-scenario path, it could be one of the five worst recorded in the region, with winds of up to 65 mph in the Seattle area.

Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan had the crowd partying like it was 1999 all over again at a tribute concert to Prince in St. Paul, Minnesota, nearly six months after his death. Fans at the Xcel Energy Center Thursday night wore purple shirts, scarves and the occasional raspberry beret in memory of Prince. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman read a proclamation declaring Thursday Prince Day in Minnesota's capital.
