This Sunday, March 15th, Maine will celebrate its 195th birthday. Maine became an independent state in 1820 breaking away from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Maine entered the union the same time Missouri did but the two were very different. Maine was an anti-slavery or ‘free’ state while Missouri was a state that allowed slavery.

All the information on the Act of Admission that declares Maine as ‘independent’ is available at the State Archives in Augusta.
