Rookie Police Officer Richard Mayer was dining with his new colleagues at a Merrillville, Indiana restaurant when a young mother approached them in a panic. Her young daughter has been choking on an apple piece and the piece was caught in the back of her throat.

The young officer jumped to aid the child, cautiously at first due to the sensitive nature of the situation. He flipped the child over and began patting her back hoping to dislodge the food from her throat. After 3 or 4 pats the food dislodged and the child was able to breathe again.

Not only was that Officer Mayer's first day on the job, saving that child's life was his first act as a paid police officer.
