The Tough Mudder obstacle course will be returning to Westbrook at the Sunset Ridge Golf Links this September. Registration has opened for the second Great Northeast event, last year's Tough Mudder drew 13,000 athletes and spectators.

This year the event will be held on September 26th and 27th.

The Tough Mudder involves an obstacle course where participants crawl through mud, dunk in ice water, climbing over walls and new this year, a tunnel crawl though what is described as a tear gas-like substance.

The cost to participate is $109 and will increase as the date approaches.

The course is 11 miles in length with 20 obstacles in total. Last year athletes from 37 states and 5 countries came to the event in Westbrook, adding $5 million into the local economy.
