On Sunday, Travis Roy was inducted to the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. Roy from Yarmouth was an elite high school hockey player who during his first game with Boston College crashed into the boards and became a quadriplegic.

Roy’s career was cut short 20 years ago after colliding with the boards during his appearance on the ice for BU after only 11 seconds.

Travis has since championed the Travis Roy Foundation which has raised millions of dollars for research and resources for paraplegics. He is an author, speaker and fundraiser for spinal cord injuries.

The Travis Roy Award, given to the top senior among Maine’s Class A boys’ hockey programs is named after him.

Along with Roy there were 11 other athletes inducted into the hall including:

John “Jack” Kelley, a U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer who coached the Colby College men's ice hockey team, guided Boston University to two national titles, led the Hartford Whalers to an AVCO Cup and was president of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Amy Vachon of Augusta who as a Cony High School basketball player was USA Today Maine Player of the Year, Gatorade Player of the Year and Miss Maine Basketball. At the University of Maine she was an assistant coach and as a player led the Black Bears to two American East championships and four NCAA tournament appearances. She also set a school and league record in assists.
