Seventy per cent of deliveries in the U.S. are made by trucks, everything from food to online shopping orders but, there is truck driver shortage in the country right now. The shortage is more noticeable now that the economy is coming back but even before the economy went in the tank there was a driver shortage.

When the economy went down the shortage wasn’t as bad because fewer deliveries had to be made but as we continue to recover, things are worse than ever. According to the American Trucking Association the industry in 30,000 to 35,000 drivers short of what they need.

Another problem for the industry is the turnover rate of drivers. In 2005, large truckload carriers leaving the craft was at 135 per cent, in the first quarter of 2014 it’s still at 94 per cent. Some student drivers are securing jobs even before graduating.
