Now that we're in September that means Maine's expanded deer hunt is getting started soon.

Two date to mark on your calendar. The first is the 'any deer permit' lottery on September 7 (Friday). 84,745 permits will be given out this year, up 28 percent from last year. The firearms season for deer runs Oct. 29 to Nov. 24.

With an 'any deer' permit hunters can harvest deer of either sex.

On necn.com another big date is September 8 (Saturday). The expanded archery season gets under way. This archery season is based in populated areas that are not open to hunting with firearms, and where state biologists have determined the deer population can withstand more hunting.
