Things you can buy at an auction, paintings, furniture, toys but a lighthouse? Yes, in fact, two Maine lighthouses are now on the auction block. It's part of a federal program to rid the government of the expenses of maintaining the lighthouses.

The two Maine lighthouses that are up for bids are Halfway Rock Light Station off Harpswell and Boon Island Light Station off York.

Both of the lighthouses are on the National Register of Historic Places. That means the new owners would need state and federal approvals to make changes.

As part of the sales agreement, each one must continue to be a navigation aid for boat traffic.

Here's for information if you and your family would like to visit one of Maine's many lighthouses this summer.
