Agents from the MDEA arrested two woman in the early morning hours of March 3 and seized a half-pound of heroin, with a street value of $60,000 as a result of an investigation that began with an inmate in the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.
According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, the two woman arrested are:

  • Monique Nichols, 24, of Hudson. McCausland said Nichols has been charged with Class “A” Aggravated Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (heroin). Her bail was set at $2,000 cash.
  • Wanda Wyman, 53, of  Bangor. McCausland said Wyman has been charged with Class “A” Aggravated Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (heroin). Her bail has been set at $50,000 cash.

According to McCausland, the drugs were being brought in from New York for resale in greater Bangor. The amount of heroin seized is the equivalent of 2,300 doses.

McCausland said the arrests came after investigators with the Maine Correctional Center in Windham and drug agents started an investigation into an inmate who is coordinating the drug importation from inside the Windham prison. The name of the inmate was not disclosed by officials because he has not been officially charged in this case.

According to McCausland, the inmate in question was arrested in April 2015 by MDEA agents in Aroostook County after he was found in possession of 50 grams of heroin. The man was convicted for aggravated trafficking in heroin and now serving a five-year sentence in the Maine Correctional Center.

During the investigation, McCausland said investigators determined the inmate was contacting people outside the prison to make runs to New York City in order to obtain heroin for resale in Bangor.

On March 2, agents learned that two women with ties to the inmate had left Bangor for New York City  to pick up heroin and return to Bangor. At about 2AM on March 3, the vehicle driven by the two women was stopped by MDEA agents and the Bangor Police as it exited I-95 onto Hammond Street.

Agents seized the half pound of heroin from one of the women’s purses and about $1,000, McCausland said, adding the two women were taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

State Police also provided assistance during the investigation. MDEA will continue to work closely with the Maine Correctional Center's Criminal Investigation Division on this investigation. According top McCausland, more arrests are likely in this case.
