The idea is to sit on a block of ice that stands about three feet tall and one foot square and stay there for 48 hours; it’s called the Ice Pole Sitting Contest and carries a prize of $3,100 for the winners. Held in Vihelmina, Sweden for a dozen years, this year, six contestants won the prize money by remaining on the block of ice for the entire 48 hours.  Each contestant gets a 10 minute bathroom break every two hours but the rest of the time they sit. Temperatures dipped to -18 during the contest but it wasn’t the cold that got to participants, it was boredom.  Two women and four men won the contest this year and had to share the purse. The idea of the Ice Pole Sitting Contest was brought to Sweden from Russia after a couple of the town’s residents participated in a similar contest there.
