Tyler Farr: ‘Success Is Always Going to Be Surprising to Me’

Some artists might meticulously try to plan their next move based on their recent successes, but Tyler Farr isn't one of those guys.

"Success is always going to be surprising to me," Farr tells The Boot. "I honestly just try to do my thing. It’s not always going to be the most popular thing -- it probably isn’t right now -- [but] it’s been working. We’ve had some hits, we’ve had some success, but we’ve got a long ways to go, and I’m always looking at it like that."

The 31-year-old, who has vocally opposed the "bro-country" label, says that he finds the entire concept of categorizing country music baffling.

"I don’t know what may put you under bro-country. I don’t even know what the heck that is. I really don’t care either," Farr says. "It either rocks, or it sucks. That’s just the bottom line.

"Great songs are great songs, whether it’s country, pop, rap, rock or crap -- and there’s a lot of crap, too, but you’ve gotta filter through it," he continues. "I don’t worry about that, or what people pigeonhole me into, or whether I offend somebody. You’ve just got to do your thing at the end of the day and be happy with yourself. If my career ends next year, I can at least walk home and say, ‘I did my thing.’"

Farr, who is a classically trained singer, says that he is determined to honor country music's heritage with the music he makes.

"Every day that I get to wake up and play country music is a good day for me. We’ve been very blessed," he notes. "I try to do my own thing and not worry about what everyone else is doing and what the new fad is, and just cling tight to the bricks. You lose the bricks, you lose the genre, and you don’t want to lose the genre. That’s something I’m very passionate about. So I’m gonna keep writing country songs for country people."

Farr and Lee Brice will begin their 2016 Life Off My Years Tour in February; the artist also has a spot in the lineup at Country Jam 2016, which will take place in June, just outside of Grand Junction, Colo. A complete list of upcoming dates is available on Farr's website.
