U.S News & World Report came up with their list of best high schools in the country and seventeen schools in Maine made the list.

The list is based on the performance of all students on state assessments in reading and math; the performance of disadvantaged students on these assessments; and the degree to which the schools prepare students for college by offering a college-level curriculum.

Here are the Maine high schools that made the list (in order):

Yarmouth High School
Falmouth High School
Cape Elizabeth High School
Wells High School
Brewer High School
Camden Hills Regional High School
York High School
Greely High School
Boothbay Region High School
Bangor High School
Scarborough High School
Gorham High School
Hampden Academy
Presque Isle High School
Madawaska Middle/High School
Mt. Desert Island High School
Sanford High School

Yarmouth, Falmouth and Cape Elizabeth all received 'Gold Medal' designations with the rest of the schools getting a 'Silver Medal'. In all 2,527 schools were on the list.
