State Police say a Unity man was killed early this morning riding his skateboard on the campus of Unity College. According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, troopers responded to the college’s entrance on Quaker Hill Road about 1:30AM for an unresponsive man who had been involved in a skateboard accident. Unity EMS also responded and determined that Christopher Garbinski, 23, of Unity had died as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash.

McCausland said Garbinski was riding on a skateboard, along with his two roommates who were riding on theirs.  The trio has been visiting friends on the campus and were heading home.  Troopers said the trio led by Garbinski descended down Loop Road toward the intersection of Quaker Hill Road and were traveling too fast to make the left hand turn.  Garbinski crossed the Quaker Hill Road  and crashed into several birch trees.  The two other two men also crashed in the same area, but sustained minor injuries. They are Sylvanus Egerton, 27, and Luke Munster, 24, both also from Unity, McCausland said.

Immediate first aid were given to Garbinski by his roommates, which were supplemented by Unity EMS a short time later.  Waldo County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the scene. The Medical Examiner’s Office plans to examine the body to determine the cause of death. Garbinski lived in Unity, but was not a student at Unity College, said McCausland.
