Balloonist Recreates ‘Up’ in Real Life

In the tear-jerker animated film ‘Up,’ a home is lifted into the sky by a cluster of party balloons.  While it all looks great in Pixar’s beautiful animated style, it doesn’t seem like it would be something you could pull off in real life.

But, in fact, cluster ballooning is a thing, and Jonathan Trappe may well be the world’s leading cluster balloonist.

In 2010, the 38-year old from Raleigh, North Carolina became the first man to cross the English Channel using a formation of the same kind of balloons you would see at a party.

He’s also flown over the Alps, and at the International Balloon Festival in Leon, Mexico last week he recreated the house flight scene from ‘Up’ using a carefully constructed cluster.

But for his next act, Trappe needs your help. He is planning on being the first person to cluster balloon across the Atlantic, a journey which will require a lot of balloons and exactly 106,215 cubic feet of helium.

So Trappe has set up an Indiegogo page to raise the $300,000 necessary for the transatlantic flight. So far, he has about $2,000 in pledges so he has a while to go. Check out Trappe in action and hear his pitch below.
