Volvo is a car manufacturer known for building vehicles with safety in mind for drivers and passengers, now Volvo is looking outside the car for pedestrian safety. It was an engineer at the Swedish car company that designed the 3-point seat belt we use today and now their introducing an exterior airbag in the new Volvo V40.

The car is on sale in Australia, but, more than likely, will not be sold in the U.S. Too bad, because pedestrian and cyclist accidents have been on the rise lately with 15% of accidents being outside the car. The airbag system will deploy if the vehicle hits a pedestrian at 12 to 30 miles per hour, but before the airbag deploys, there are 7 sensors that determine if it’s a human that is crossing its path. When it determines what it is, it takes less than a second for it to protect.
