Two women were found dead in their submerged vehicle shortly before midnight Tuesday.

The bodies of Amy Stiner, 37, of Machias and Melissa Moyer, 38, of Sunbury, Pa., were located in their vehicle about 175 feet off the Pond Cove boat ramp north of Roque Bluffs State Park, according to a release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Stiner was five months pregnant, police said.

The accident is under investigation.

Earlier in the day, the Maine Warden Service was called to search for the two women who had become lost on the hiking trails at the park. The women and their dog later were located with the help of a local landowner and returned to their vehicle at the state park.

Police say the women started their vehicle and were last seen driving toward the road.  A short time later, the Maine Warden Service received a call from dispatch that the women had called to say they had driven their vehicle into the water.

The GPS coordinates from the phone placed them almost a mile from where they were last seen, according to police.

The Maine Warden Service responded, but could not locate the car or the two women.  Local fire departments quickly arrived on scene along with deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Machias Police Department, Maine Marine Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard.

The dog also was lost in the accident.
