At the Waterville city council meeting on Tuesday, firefighter Allen Nygren, received an official mayoral recognition for his actions during the 75-car pileup on I-95.

Nygren, and EMT, was off duty and on his way home when he came across the pileup and jumped into action to provide medical help to those injured. Nygren performed triage on injured motorist for five hours and was honored for his act of selflessness.

17 people were injured in the pileup but there were no deaths.
