Who Is Your Child Obsessed With?

I've never seen anything like it...well, not since my huge obsession with New Kids on the Block back in the 80's.  I remember it very well.  My bedroom walls were covered with NKOTB posters.  I had the dolls.  Saw them in concert twice.  I was going to marry Joey.  (Now, it's Donnie...just sayin).  But, now as a parent, I'm learning the joys (note sarcasm) that comes with having a preteen daughter completely obsessed with a heartthrob.  

My daughter, Emma, is completely 'gaga' over a YouTuber named 'BajanCanadian'.  I'm completely baffled because it's not Justin Bieber or One Direction...or anyone else you'd expect a 12 year-old girl to be planning her first marriage with.  This guy simply makes Minecraft videos on YouTube.  Really??  I'm so far behind the times, clearly.  I don't see the satisfaction of watching people play video games.  But he seems like a respectable role-model so I'll leave it be.

So, my 'gaga' in love daughter wanted nothing for Christmas, but a sweatshirt 'BajanCanadian' is notorious for wearing.  They aren't easy to get...and like typical marketing, he made parents sweat it out to the last minute before making the sweatshirts available for sale.  Luckily, I got minute to minute updates from my daughter on when the sweatshirt finally became available.  However, I had to trick her into thinking there wasn't a chance that she was getting it.

I was successful!  When she opened her package, the tears flowed!  She was even one of the lucky ones who got his autograph.  She said I was the coolest mom ever...I didn't realize that status was in question...but good to know.

I guess if there's anything that I take from this, it's that Emma is a leader and doesn't go with what 'everybody' else is into.  Bravo Emma!
