Are you ready for winter? Well, there are some mixed messages as to what we can expect in the winter weather forecast this year. That New England staple, The Old Farmer's Almanac, which has a fairly good track record for predicting the weather, has some bad news for Mainers. According to the almanac's long range weather forecast for New England, "winter will be much colder than normal."

As for snow, the almanac predicts some good news, calling for "below-normal snowfall," with the snowiest periods coming in mid-to-late November, mid and late December and early to mid-March.

But, if the almanac isn't your thing, you can turn to the winter forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The NOAA is calling for a warmer-than-usual winter for New England, as shown in the map below.

As for snow, the NOAA is a little less clear. It is calling for what could be a wetter winter in some sections of southern Maine, with the rest of the state having what the NOAA deems an "equal chance" for above-, near-, or below-normal precipitation.

Here is the NOAA's map.
