Maine Nurses Plan Two-Day Strike Over Staffing Concerns
Nurses at Houlton Regional Hospital say they’ve reached their limit, and next week, they’re walking off the job for two days in protest over what they call unsafe staffing levels and declining patient care.
The Maine State Nurses Association (MSNA) confirmed it delivered an official strike notice to the hospital last Friday, giving administrators a week’s warning before the planned walkout. The strike, set to last two days, follows months of tense negotiations between union nurses and hospital management.
Union leaders say their goal isn’t to abandon patients but to make sure they can safely care for them. “We want to provide the best care possible,” the MSNA said in a statement to WGME, “but we can’t do that without enough staff.”
Nurses voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike back in September, after their previous contract expired in November 2023. WGME reported that since then, both sides have been locked in bargaining sessions with little progress on staffing ratios and pay increases.
Hospital officials have not released a detailed statement about how patient care will be handled during the walkout, though administrators say contingency plans are being developed to ensure services continue, the news station reported.
Union representatives insist they’re still willing to negotiate but say hospital leadership has failed to take their concerns seriously. They’re calling for better nurse-to-patient ratios, improved working conditions, and a contract that keeps experienced caregivers from leaving for larger hospitals.
If no deal is reached before the strike begins, Houlton could become the latest Maine community to see a nursing walkout a growing sign of frustration in hospitals across the state.
