If your kiddo is hitting that age where they want a job, or you want them to learn some more responsibility, let's dive into some options for working at 14, in Maine.

Here's the thing: Reality Check
First off, let's look at Maine's Labor Laws. They are pretty strict. According to the Maine Department of Labor, 14 year old's can work, but the opportunities are a bit hard to find.
So the first task for your kiddo to start practicing their communication skills, is calling and reaching out to local businesses to inquire about their hiring age!
Many employers do prefer hiring older teens because of the restrictions on hours and the tasks they are able to perform.

So, which business would hire a 14-yr-old in Maine?
Some businesses, are known to give younger teens a shot. Make sure to remember, their are restrictions to each business on hiring younger teens.
Here are a few spots that may consider putting your kiddo on the books:
Check out your local Fast Food Chains like McDonalds or Burger King. They have been known to hire younger teens for cashier roles.
Grocery Stores: Hannaford or Shaw's Supermarket will occasionally hires baggers or cart grabbers starting at young ages as well.
Amusement Parks: Seasonal spots that are open during the summer will sometimes offer roles to younger teens like ticket sellers or game attendants. There are restrictions due to the risk of injury working near any of the big machinery, so always make sure you are clear on which part of the park you can work at.
Camps: There are many camps in Maine that hire younger teens for counselors, assistants, or helper positions. Since camps are all about kids, it makes sense they’d welcome responsible, younger teens to help out!

Think outside the (lunch) box
Since there are a limited number of options for a teen, you can get creative as well!
Here are some more entrepreneurial ideas for your 14-year-old:
Lawn Mowing Artist: Offer mowing for a rate that is agreeable as well as general yard upkeep services.
Pro Pup Walker: Dog walking, pet sitting, or even pet grooming for neighbors
Junior Entrepreneur: Start a small business, like creating something, like 3d printed gadgets or toys for others to buy. Put them online and share your page!
Tech Assistant: There are many people who are not tech savvy and would most likely pay for a tutor!
Social Media Content Creator: After all, it is 2025, so this list is not going to be filled up unless I mention that hundreds of thousands of young teens are making money online creating content.
