According to a recent report, this city in our Pine Tree State has been named one of 2025’s best for women.

So, with that in mind, how do we know what makes one city better for women than another? What criteria are being considered?
WalletHub’s recent report on the 'Best & Worst Cities for Women (2025)' compared 182 U.S. cities based on two main dimensions: ‘Women’s Economic & Social Well-Being’ and ‘Women’s Health Care & Safety.’ Using 15 weighted metrics scored on a 100-point scale, the study calculated each city’s overall score and ranked them accordingly.

Okay, with that cleared up, let’s look at the numbers. How did Maine rank? We know we have one of the best cities, but just how good are we?
Again, according to WalletHub and their recent report highlighting the ‘Best & Worst Cities for Women (2025),’ making the list at #12 is Portland, Maine—while the other Portland ranked 30th.
Portland placed 20th for ‘Women’s Economic & Social Well-Being’ and 44th in ‘Women’s Health Care & Safety,’ showing both strengths and areas for growth.
The report from WalletHub continues by noting Columbia, Maryland, at the very top of the list, with South Burlington, Vermont, representing New England in the top five.
