I stumbled across a YouTube video posted by "Living in Southern Maine" which is the name of the channel that features real estate agents Michael and Margaret Patterson. It caught my attention because it was titled "Don't Move to Maine," which seemed odd coming from a Maine real estate agent.

I watched it and there were some good points on why you shouldn't move to Maine and some, not so good. Take a look at the video and then check out my takes on each of the 8 reasons why you shouldn't move to Maine.

Now, here's my take:

The Weather

Maine gets all the seasons to the extreme. Winters are cold, summers are hot and muggy, and spring and autumn fall somewhere in between. The saying "If you don't like the weather in Maine, wait a minute," couldn't be more true as the weather will turn on a dime. So I agree with Margaret on this one.

The Bugs

Yep. We've got bugs. Mosquitos and ticks are the big ones to look out for. But if you want to move to Maine, you can hire a service that will spray for all those annoying bugs, as I do, and you'll never see any of them in your backyard.

Allergies

This never used to be a problem for me, but seasonal allergies started affecting me as I got older. I take an allergy pill every day and it does the trick.

Cost of Living

This is what sucks the most about Maine. It's stupidly expensive to live here. The average cost of living in Maine in 2024 was $50,559 per year. A lot of residents don't make that kind of money. On the other hand, a lot of people who move to Maine have plenty, so it might not be an issue for some.

Maine is Small

Yes, Maine is small. And we like it! Some of the best places in Maine are where the transplants and tourists aren't. They're ocean-side. Go inland and you'll find more beauty than just the sea and other places where you can enjoy the outdoors without another single soul around.

Lack of Diversity

It is what it is. Maine is the whitest state in the county at 93%. Diversity is good, but it just isn't a thing here.

Tourism & Traffic

Oh, the tourists. They found us and they are here all summer long. Luckily though if you aren't in Portland, Kennebunk, Scarbrough, or any of the other towns near the ocean, you won't see them as much. Try driving down Commercial Street in the summer. It'll take you forever with the crowds.

People Are Mean

Mainers aren't mean, but we do keep to ourselves. You go about your business and we'll go about ours.

LOOK: Cool Car Features We Kind of Miss

Kids these days don't know what they're missing out on! But hey, let's be real, some of those old car features were pretty awesome. Yeah, they might've been a bit risky and even tried to kill us, but they made our rides feel way cooler.
