3 Recent Maine Restaurant Closures That Really Surprised Me
I guess with the most recent restaurant turn over rate in Maine I should be saying I'm not surprised that these ones also closed their doors for good, but I still am. These ones felt like staples in the community that would never really go away.. until they did.
Frog & Turtle Westbrook, Maine
This one utterly shocked me. You know how serious I am because I used the word utterly out of no where.
Ever since I moved to Westbrook, I've heard the name of this place come out of so many people's mouths a week that you would have thought it was the capital of the city. March 2, 2025 Frog & Turtle permanently closed their doors out of what felt like no where.
Cafe Louise South Portland
This place was always interesting to me. Everything they did there almost reminded me of a different late restaurant in Portland that closed called Silly's. They had awesome brunch because it was unlike any other breakfast spot, and it was just small enough to feel cozy.
Slab Sicilian Street Food
This one to me, was the most surprising closure due to one huge factor, Barstool Sports.
Back in 2023 Barstool's CEO Dave Portnoy picked Slab Sicilian Street Food as a candidate on his One Bite Pizza Review show ranking their slice a 6.6.

Typically any pizza shop that he gives massive publicity will go under-staffed because of the high demand that comes from it much like Monte's pizza in Portland did. Slab however, did quite the opposite and permanently moved out and on.
Don't worry though! If you were a Slab dough lover like me, they still distribute their frozen dough!
