I don't have to tell you how beautiful the state of Maine is.

With its pristine mountains, rolling forests, and unmatched coastline, the Pine Tree State is easily one of the truly special corners of this country.

Maine's Beautiful Islands

While the mainland garners the majority of attention, it should be noted that the state is also home to a number of gorgeous islands, many of which are inhabited year-round. These islands can be found throughout the entire Maine coastline, each with its own unique charm and townsfolk.

So, just how incredible are some of these island towns? Well, one located in Downeast Maine was named one of the best fishing villages in the country. I'd say that's pretty special.

America's Most Charming Fishing Towns Includes Stonington, Maine

The popular site The Travel published a very interesting article about the country’s most charming fishing towns. In fact, the site selected just 16 to represent the country's best. One of its selections can be found right here in Maine: the town of Stonington.

Located on the southern half of Deer Isle, Stonington is a town of just a little over 1,000 residents. The island community is most known for its massive lobster production. It's consistently a top lobster processor in Maine and one of the largest in the entire country. I feel like that's a big enough accomplishment to be added to any list.

However, Stonington is much more than that. It's a town located right in the heart of one of Maine's most beautiful areas. It's not far from both Midcoast Maine and Mount Desert Island.

Stonington also looks like it's right out of a reference book of what a small Maine island community should look like. Beautiful homes line the coastline, marine wildlife is prevalent, local shops and eateries grace the downtown, and did I mention all that lobster?

Here's a little from The Travel on why it included Stonington on this prestigious list.

The quaint fishing village receives many travelers every year. There are a good number of unique shops and gorgeous views on Main Street. Whether visiting this area of Maine as a family, traveling solo, or with friends, there are plenty of fun adventures to enjoy in this charming village.

I think I should also mention the allure of its remoteness. I mean, we are talking about a quaint fishing village on the southern tip of an island that has one way in and one way out. It's more than likely always going to have a wonderfully charming remoteness about it.
