Portland Disposable Bag Fees Start This Week
Portland is the first community in Maine that is banning polystyrene foam food and drink containers and to establish a nickel fee for disposable shopping bags.
The new law in Portland is aimed at reducing litter and to help the environment.
Opponents say they're a burden to the public and don't address the real causes of litter.
More than 130 communities across the country have adopted disposable bag fees that range from a nickel to a quarter per bag. Freeport banned foam containers since the early 1990's.
