Though there’ve been countless trailers and images for ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘ — heck, we went to Comic-Con and even the set itself to learn more about this film — you may still be wondering what it is all about. Is it a sequel? A prequel? A spinoff? Let’s put these questions to rest as the cast and crew behind ‘Rise’ walks us through the story in a new behind-the-scenes featurette.
Based on Mark Millar’s graphic novel ‘Xerxes’ — which hasn’t even hit store shelves yet, so don’t worry about not having done your homework — ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ is more of a companion film, says producer Zack Snyder (yes, the director of ‘Man of Steel‘ and the upcoming ‘Batman vs. Superman‘ movie). Noam Murro directs the film, which takes place at the same time as the events of the first film but from the perspective of an Athens general leading his navy on a different attack against the Persians. See? Not so complicated.
We also get to see the origins of the Persian “God King” Xerxes, played by Rodrigo Santoro, from the first film, and we see the hand behind his creation — Eva Green‘s Artemnesia. The actress is turning over a new leaf with a slew of dark roles, including stints in the new ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For‘ as the ‘Dame to Kill For’ and the new Showtime monster-mash series, ‘Penny Dreadful,’ so we can’t wait to see her in action as the God King’s general.
