A 68 year old man from Holden died Saturday after attempting to climb Mount Katahdin and losing his footing on the Abol Slide, falling more than 1,000 feet before coming to rest near the bottom of the open section of the slide.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the man was identified by a local funeral home as John H. Stetson from Holden.

Stetson was pronounced dead at the scene.

This marks the second death in the park this month. A New Hampshire man died near the outlet of Abol Pond after separating from his seven-member skiing group on February 5th.
