Even if you haven't seen the schmaltzy 1981 movie 'Endless Love,' chances are you're at least familiar with the classic Diana Ross/Lionel Richie duet it spawned. And, that makes sense. The song was wildly popular; the movie was not (Roger Ebert called it "a narrative and logical mess"). Despite that, Universal has pressed ahead with a remake and...it's about as melodramatic as you'd expect.

Unlike the 1981 movie and the Scott Spencer novel the film is based on, the remake (starring Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde) flips the plot so that now an over-privileged girl falls in love with a rough-and-tumble dude. Like the previous incarnations, fate and angry parents conspire to keep them apart. It's about two teenagers who fall in love, have a lot of sex and it opens on Valentine's Day. It should make a ton of money.

Had the movie gone back and instead stayed more true to the original novel, it might be something worth revisiting, but this version (from the director of 'Country Strong'), looks more like a paint-by-numbers remake of a film that was never much good to begin with.

Oddly, considering the film is best known for the love song it spawned, the theme is nowhere near this trailer, instead focusing on a breathy cover of Robert Palmer's 80s staple "Simply Irresistible." (Also curious, the first 2/3 of the trailer are edited like a horror movie.)

'Endless Love' opens on February 14, 2014 and you can watch the trailer above. If you're curious to revisit the original, you can watch the full 1981 'Endless Love' movie online here.
