According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, the Maine Fire Marshal's Office is in the process of investigating a Friday morning fire at a home in Madawaska.

The press release explains that just after 12:30 AM on Friday (February 16), the fire department and police department were called to a home on 5th Avenue.

When they arrived, they found two elderly adults trapped inside the home.

The press release goes on to say:

Two police officers who arrived on scene first were able to enter the residence and rescue an adult female. She was taken to Northern Maine Medical Center and later transported via Lifeflight to a hospital in Southern Maine. An adult male was trapped inside the residence and could not be rescued.

The female, who survived, has been identified as 70-year-old Diana Levesque.

The man, who passed away in the fire, is believed to be 62-year-old Gary Levesque.  Mr. Levesque is the brother of Diana Levesque.  The two reportedly lived together in the home.

The remains of the deceased have been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.  An autopsy will be performed. and the remains will be identified.

While the investigation into the fire is ongoing, officials say that they do not suspect foul play in the blaze.

The press release explains that two police officers received minor injuries during the rescue.  Both were treated at a local hospital and released.

First responders from Madawaska were assisted by members of the Frenchville Fire Department.
