UPDATED 3:15PM State Police say the man who shot himself with a flare gun Tuesday in Freeport is Daniel Abbott, 65 of Portland.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, Abbott is being treated at Maine Medical Center for burns and injuries to his head.

McCausland said, the two motorists who stopped and helped him were: Jayson Forgues, 42, of Freeport and Paul Oleston, 48, of Topsham.   Forgues used his fire extinguisher to put the fire out in the cab and Oleston helped pull Abbott  to safety, McCausland said.

The pickup had been modified to run on propane and troopers say if the fire had got out of control, the propane tank in the truck’s bed likely would have exploded.  The case is being investigated as an attempted suicide, according to McCausland.
