Located in Kennebec County, Waterville sits on the bank of the Kennebec River.  Originally, the city was part of Winslow.

In 1802, it was determined that the fact that the river made it difficult for people living in the part of town to make it to Winslow town meetings.  As a result, it was decided that those living on the west side of the Kennebec River would create their own town.

As of 2020, the town had a population of just under 16,000.

Once a mill and railroad town, Waterville has become a cultural and educational center.  The town is now home to two great centers of higher learning: Colby College and Thomas College.
