It was the Winston Cup, then the Nextel Cup and now the NASCAR sponsor is Sprint. It is called the Sprint Cup and will remain that way through the 2016 season but after that NASCAR will be looking for a new sponsor.

NASCAR has seen a decline in viewership over the past couple of years despite recently signing a 10 year, $8.3 billion television deal. NASCAR will have to look for another globally known brand to take Sprints place. By 2017 when the change will be made it will be the third different sponsor in 13 years. When it was known as the Winston Cup Series, that sponsorship lasted 33 years.

Expect a new sponsor to pony-up big bucks. The 2004 Nextel deal was at least $70 million per year. When Sprint bought Nextel, the name was changed. The race sponsor funds the annual point bonuses which add up to more than $20 million.
