In week 4 of college football there was one upset in the top 10 and two upsets overall in the top twenty. Number 1, Florida State, playing without starting QB Jameis Winston because of suspension, hung on to beat Clemson in over time 23-17.

FSU backup QB Sean Maquire threw for 305 yards but had two interceptions and the Seminoles could not run the ball (13 yards on 27 attempts). Ironically it was a 12 year run in OT that won the game.

#2 Oregon won over Washington State when State could not convert on a 4th down late in the game. The two teams combined for 1,000 yards of offense.  Oregon 501, Washington State, 499.

#3 Alabama was tied with Florida after the opening series of the second half when the Gators scored to tie the game.  The Crimson Tide then ran off 21 straight points to take the lead for good. Bama QB Blake Sims threw for a school record 445 passing yards. Final 42-21.

#4 Oklahoma and West Virginia where tied at the half 24-24 but OU outscored the Mountaineers in the second half 21-10. Oklahoma’s freshman running back Samaje Perine ran for 242 yards on 34 carries and scored 4 TD’s. Final 45-32.

#5 Auburn played a tough #20 Kansas State team on Thursday night by controlling the tempo of the game in the second half. Kansas State had 3 turnovers and missed three field goals that could have won the game. Auburn 20, Kansas State 14.

The big upset in week 4 was unranked Mississippi State beating #8 LSU 34-29. State piled up 570 total yards against LSU, 302 on the ground and 268 in the air. LSU  ran for only 89 yards.

The other upset was unranked Indiana beating #18 Missouri 31-27. Indiana scored the winning touchdown with 22 seconds left, a 3 yard run by D’Angelo Roberts. Both teams ran the exact same amount of plays in the game, 83.

The University of Maine lost to Boston College 40-10 after jumping to an early 7-0 lead.  In the end Maine’s defense was on the field too long as BC held the ball for a total of 38:50 in the game. The Eagles gained Maine 549 yards to 139.
