There has got to be a better way to teach children how to manage their money.

At least two third-grade students at Mill Plain Elementary School, in Vancouver, Washington, wet themselves because they didn't have enough fake money to use the bathroom, as part of their teacher's policy in which kids earn cash and use it to spend on treats, food and trips to the restroom.

The students get Monopoly money by behaving well and performing well in class, but at least two kids used up all their money, thus barring them from bathroom privileges.

One parent said the policy makes no sense:

My daughter finally told me, ‘We have to pay to use the bathroom.' Nobody should have to pay to use the bathroom."

The school wouldn't comment on the matter, but a spokeswoman for the school district defended the policy, saying, “It’s all part of how they manage the classroom and so that was the process that was decided upon."

It should be noted students do get bathroom breaks throughout the day and that teachers decided if they can go at other points in the day.

The school is investigating the issue.
