October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness month which has been going on since 1981 with the National Coalition against Domestic Violence. It originally started as a single day in October but has since expanded to the entire month. The day in 1981 quickly turned into a week and then in 1987 it became an entire month with the idea being, working to end violence against women and children. That same year a national toll-free hotline was opened and in 1989 the first Domestic Violence awareness Month Legislation was passed by Congress.
