Recently I had to fly to Florida and had to search for an airline ticket. I kind of got lucky because I left on a Friday and returned on Thanksgiving Day. The price I paid, because I flew on turkey day, was much cheaper than if I had booked a flight on the weekend. Here are the times the experts say are the best times to book flights to save money.

Almost always the cheapest days to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday and the most expensive days are Friday and Sunday. Another cheaper time to fly is the early morning flight because most people don’t want to get to the airport at 4 in the morning for a 6 a.m. flight. You can save some money by booking a ‘red eye’ flight (late at night) or a dinner time flight.

According to research the best time to ‘book’ a flight is Tuesday at 3 p.m. est. This is the day most airlines release their best flight deals. If you have the time to book in advance your best bet is to book between 30 days and three months out. For international flights it’s best to book from a month and a half to five and half months ahead of time. Any last minute booking will usually cost you big bucks.

Another way to save is to call the airline directly and be willing to have a layover. Direct flights are convenient but most of the time a layover will save you money.
