After months of teaser images, Sony has finally released the first official trailer for 'The Equalizer,' starring Denzel Washington as a brooding protagonist who's gonna kick some down and dirty mafia ass and save a wayward young girl. So basically, yes, it's definitely a Denzel Washington movie.

Loosely based on the '80s television series of the same name, the film stars Washington as a retired black ops soldier just trying to live his life in peace, until he comes across a young prostitute (Chloe Moretz) in need of some help. But when he kills some Russian mobsters, all hell breaks loose. The trailer features Washington doing some version of his own Guy Ritchie 'Sherlock Holmes' thing, using a timer on his watch to see how many seconds it will take for him to eliminate some bad guys, while also pinpointing the threats and his options for weapons in the room -- which could be a pretty neat element if it's not overplayed.

Here's the official synopsis:

In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston.  When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help.  He is The Equalizer.

Directed by Washington's pal Antoine Fuqua ('Training Day,' 'Olympus Has Fallen'), the film also stars Melissa Leo, Martin Csokas, and Bill Pullman, and hits theaters on September 26.
