Hidden gem leaf peeping in our own back yard. Who knew? I mean, we expect crowds during the fall season here in New England, and let's be honest, we're used to them from the summer months anyway. So if you're up for discovering the least crowded places to peep at the changing of the colors during a day trip or getaway in each state in New England, I have that list for you.

According to MSN, who compiled the 10 least crowded places to enjoy the fall colors in the Northeast, six are actually in New England. So, here's where to go to avoid those crowds for a vibrant, beautiful fall.

New Hampshire

Jackson is one of the least crowded for that autumn escape, where you can stare in awe at the vibrant colors around Jackson Falls near Carter Notch Road with tiered, cascading waters. It's a mesmerizing place in a very untouched, natural, and adventurous setting, according to MSN.

Maine

Camden is a kick-back and take-it-all-in town according to MSN, especially if you enjoy the uncrowded, scenic stroll along the Camden Harbor. Cruises during the sunrise and sunset really give you those memorable moments. MSN also says that taking in Camden Hill State Park is a hidden gem for fall leaf peepers.

Massachusetts

Hello to Stockbridge in the Berkshires as a tranquil fall destination. According to MSN, you can embark on a nearly two-mile hike to the Laura Lookout Tower for a panoramic view of the Berkshires and the Catskills, or amble through the idyllic, historic New England downtown surround by big, beautiful trees. Goodrich Memorial Park also has trails to meander through the vibrant hues over the Housatonic River for a peaceful leaf peeping experience.

Vermont

Continuing with this top 10 list is one of my favorite places for autumn that is truly without the crowds, and that's Stowe, Vermont. According to MSN, the Gold Brook Covered Bridge and surrounding area is stunning like a postcard without the crowds, as is Smugglers Notch Pass State Park.

Connecticut

Welcome to Mystic, Connecticut. According to MSN, Mystic is one of New England's best-kept secrets for foliage in all its splendor, with that tranquil, small-town feel right on the ocean. Whether you enjoy a fall boat cruise down the Mystic River or take in nature walks at the Pedquotsepos Nature Center, the colors are worth admiring without the crowds.

Rhode Island

Exeter, according to MSN, is another of the least-crowded New England towns that comes alive in a whole new way with its vivid colors. The Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge is an hidden landscape of color around fields, forests, and streams with well-marked trails.
