Toby Keith's new song is full of attitude, but that's assumed, given the title. 'Shut Up and Hold' on will remind fans of 'Made in America,' Keith's last No. 1 hit, but the production of this bluesy rocker is grittier and more complex.

Credit Keith for continuing to bend his sound to fit the times without alienating his longtime fans. His cadence is short of hip-hop, but he's not really singing until the chorus. "Get in, sit down, shut up and hold on / Can't wait, too late, it's time to get gone / Show up downtown, get us a buzz on / Get in, sit down, shut up and hold on," he says. Bobby Pinson helped him write this lead track from the 'Drinks After Work' album.

A bluesy guitar open gives way to a rumbling beat that's held down with rock guitars and later, a hot harmonica solo. The arrangement is as aggressive as his story. In fact, the layers of sound are what make the song. Lyrically, it's a familiar story.

"Just got paid, got a little money / After a shave and after a honey / Got my name on a shot of jack whiskey / Gonna roll with me, gotta roll quickly," Keith sings to open the song.

The final minute offers more surprises and unexpected instrumentation. The chorus of "Oh-oh-oh" is a creative touch to wrap up this anything-but-conventional song from a country hitmaker.

Why Fans Will Love It: The song is a great fit for this singer. Few do attitude better than Toby Keith.

Key Lyrics: "Get in, sit down, shut up and hold on / Can't wait, too late, it's time to get gone / Find us a dirt road, and get a groove on / Get in, sit down, shut up and hold on"

Did You Know?: Pinson is a longtime Toby Keith collaborator, but he also had some solo success of his own. In 2005, 'Don't Ask Me How I Know' reached the Top 20, and his 'Man Like Me' album was released that May. He parted ways with RCA Records after the follow-up single, 'Way Down,' failed to make an impact.
