The highly anticipated ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ trailer has hit the web, highlighting the mega-mutant cast from both the original ‘X-Men’ trilogy and the ‘First Class’ batch.
Bryan Singer (who directed ‘X-Men’ and ‘X2,’ and produced ‘The Last Stand’ and ‘First Class’) noted in his live Twitter Q&A on Monday that this ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ trailer is “primarily a character piece,” since most of the special effects work still needs to be completed. However, what we do get is a rundown of some of the major faces we’ll see in play, mainly the dueling time-displaced storylines of the future X-Men (Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry) and the mutants of the ’70s (James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence) — even our first looks at Bishop (Omar Sy), Blink (Fan Bingbing), Warpath (Booboo Stewart) and Sunspot (Adam Canto).
Based on the classic comic book story arch by Chris Claremont, ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ sees an apocalyptic future where mutankind is being hunted down by giant Sentinel robots, invented by Bolivar Trask (‘Game of Thrones’ favorite Peter Dinklage). To prevent the devastation, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is sent back in time to warn the X-Men of the ’70s of the life-altering moment that sets everything into motion.
With such a large cast — which also includes Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, Evan Peters, Shawn Ashmore and more — the immediate worry is that the story could potentially suffer under its weight. However, the presence of Singer at the helm gives us comfort. His ‘X2′ was the second-highest grossing ‘X-Men’ film until James Mangold’s ‘The Wolverine‘ came slashing into theaters; but in most fan circles, it’s more acclaimed than the first-place holder, Brett Ratner’s ‘The Last Stand.’ Will he have the same success once again?
‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ hits theaters March 24, 2014.
