Amtrak Train Hits, Kills 27-Year-Old Woman in Maine on Tuesday Trip to Boston
A woman is dead following a train/pedestrian crash that happened in Maine on Tuesday morning.
According to WMTW News 8, the collision between the southbound Amtrak train and the woman happened just before 5:45 Tuesday morning. That's when police say they received the first calls for help from the engineer of the train.
WMTW reports that the train was making an early morning run to Boston from Brunswick and had just stopped to pick up more passengers when it struck a 27-year-old woman at the Main Street train crossing in Biddeford, Maine.
Officials say the Amtrak train came to a stop at the scene, subsequently blocking Main Street traffic in Biddeford for multiple hours.
Police indicated to the news station the the woman died at the scene of the crash and, as of Tuesday morning, her name was not being released to the public pending the investigation and notification of next-of-kin.
Officials say at that at the time of the accident there were 28 passengers onboard the Amtrak Downeaster. Multiple trains were then cancelled because of the delays caused by the early-morning crash.
It wasn't until approximately 9:00 Tuesday morning that the train involved in the crash, train #682, had left the scene bound for Boston.
