Apparently, There Are Two Lincoln Maines

I was born and raised in Maine, so just over 29 years here. I lived in Lincoln County for 23 of those years and attended Lincoln Academy.

In high school, I attended a camp of sorts with gals from across the state. My roommate and I laughed because she went to Lincoln High School and at first we were really confused. She said Lincoln was near Bangor, where the camp was located.

So here I've spent the years since being aware of Lincoln, Maine, near Bangor. Then yesterday I was looking at a map of Maine and discovered something very interesting.

There's another Lincoln, Maine!

First of all, I didn't think there could be two towns of the same name in a state. That seems like it would be incredibly confusing. The one I knew of is in Penobscot County but the other one is in Oxford County bordering New Hampshire.

Lincoln, Maine in Penobscot County was named in honor of Enoch Lincoln, who was the state's 6th governor and it was established around a water-powered sawmill in the 1800s and now has a population of over 5,000 according to Wikipedia.

Upon further research Lincoln, Maine in Oxford County, apparently it's technically a plantation. I don't know about you but when I hear the word plantation I immediately think of pilgrims, Plymouth Rock, and colonial times.

Again, Wikipedia comes in with the info. Apparently, the use of the word plantation in this sense is exclusive to Maine. It's defined as "a type of minor civil division falling between township (or unorganized territory) and town."

Lincoln Plantation has a population of just 46 people which breaks down to 1.4 people per square mile of the area according to the 2000 census.

So if you ever need to visit or send a letter to Lincoln, Maine, you might want to check the zip code!
