Are These Really the Oddest Town Names in Maine, Massachusetts?
There is no doubt that here in New England, we have some really strange town names.
Many of the names for our cities and towns came from Native American words. Of course, in many cases, what ended up being the town name was a butchered Native American word.
For example, Kennebec comes from the Abenaki word 'kinnipekw'.
In other cases, the names were taken from the names of well-known cities from the immigrants countries of origin. There are lots of cases of this in Maine, including Calais, Moscow, Paris, and Manchester.
What are the strangest, oddest, or rudest town names in each New England state?
Recently, the team at The FW put together their list of the strangest town names in each state. Some of the names they selected aren't really all that strange, but all make you wonder about why they ended up with that name.
Here are their selections for each of the New England states:
Maine – For the Pine Tree State, they selected Burnt Porcupine Island. You've never heard of it? Neither had we! Apparently, it is a small island off the coast of Gouldsboro.
New Hampshire – Happy Corner was the selection for New Hampshire. You'll find the tiny town on Route 3, just east of Pittsburg, in the far northern part of the state.
Massachusetts – Located near Brimfield, you'll find Dingley Dell. Apparently, it is a popular hiking spot.
Vermont – The selection for Vermont is Bread Loaf. Located in the Green Mountain National Forest, it is a great place to start your Vermont wilderness adventure.
Rhode Island – You'll find Common Fence Point near Portsmouth. Like much of the state, the town is right on the water.
Connecticut - Their pick for Connecticut was Cornwall. Not a really strange name, but it has an odd claim to fame. Apparently, it is known as "the home of the covered bridge".
What is your opinion on their selections? Do you agree? Why or why not? Let us know by sending us a message inside our app.
