Augusta’s ‘Fall Cleanup’ Will Allow Residents to Dispose of Bulky Waste

The city of Augusta is preparing to do something they haven't done in eight years. Beginning next Monday (9-20) and running through Monday the 27th. The program will allow Augusta residents to dispose of 'bulky waste, brush and metal items'.

If residents are interested in the service they will need to contact the Public Works office at 207.626.2435 to have their items added to the pickup list. Keep in mind that this week-long service is only being offered to Augusta residents who are currently already utilizing the the City of Augusta's curbside trash pickup.

With the bulky waste collection, the first 'unit' will be free pickup with each additional unit costing residents a $15 fee. The Kennebec Journal indicates that a 'unit' size may vary depending on the size and type of the waste. Your best option for determining how many 'units' you may have is to contact the Public Works Office.

Some items that residents may not dispose of during this event include fuel cans, televisions, florescent light bulbs, vehicle batteries, items containing mercury and items that may be too heavy to 'reasonably handle'.

According to the Kennebec Journal, city officials remain concerned that pent-up demand along with limited resources and staff could bog down the process. City Manager, Bill Bridgeo indicated that once people start moving their items out to the curb, they won't be bringing them back inside, so the city will need to find a way to get it all cleared up.

Bridgeo said to Augusta City Councilors, “if this is very popular, it’s going to overwhelm the resources we have. Unfortunately, once a bunch of stuff ends up on the curb, it’s not going back into the garage. At some point it’s going to need to be picked up.”
