Did You Know One of the Best Ski Bars in America is Tucked Away in Maine?
While many people will argue that the best skiing and boarding in the nation is in the western part of the United States, there is no denying that the birthplace of modern skiing is New England.
Many true ski historians would agree that the modern era of skiing in the United States began with the February 1939 arrival of Hannes Schneider in New Hampshire.
According to an article in the New York Times, his arrival was quite an event. The article explains that the Austrian-born ski instructor arrived in North Conway aboard the Eastern Slope Express, and it felt like everyone with skis within a hundred miles showed up to see him. Church bells rang. The town band played. For a small mountain village, it was about as big a welcome as it gets.
Schneider was introduced to his eighteen American instructors before Harvey Gibson walked him to the park. That is where 150 boys and girls from the Eastern Slope Junior Ski School were waiting, lined up with their gear, ready to meet their new ski master. From their, they visited what would become Cranmore Mountain Resort.
The articles goes on to say that Schneider said he was genuinely surprised by how much skiing in the United States has progressed since his last visit in November of 1936. He added that he was thrilled with both the conditions and the friendliness of the Eastern Slope region. Of course, during his time in New England, skiing would really come into its own here in the United States.
While Cranmore Mountain Resort is still an iconic ski resort, the last eight decades have seen the rise of even more impressive ski resorts across Northern New England. Many of these iconic resorts are in Maine. Sunday River, Lost Valley, Pleasant Mountain, and Sugarloaf, for example.
Because of this, it should not be a big surprise that Maine is home to some amazing apres ski bars. In fact, according to a 2017 USA Today article, one of the best in the nation is here in Maine.
