My brain practically 'sploded when I ready this, the starting pay for Maine teachers is only $30,000 dollars. THAT breaks my heart. These are people in charge of tomorrows leaders. Fortunately it seems that raising teachers salaries is at the top of the list for Gov. Mills. Vice Chairwoman Rep. Victoria Kornfield, D-Bangor, has put a bill into place to get the starting salary raised to $40,000. The two other bills are L.D. 419, which would raise the minimum pay to $50,000, and L.D. 898, a more comprehensive bill sponsored by Millett.

In certain areas Maine is actually facing a teacher shortage which they hope raising the wage will fix. According to CentralMaine.com the state teachers union is “absolutely in favor of raising” minimum salaries to at least $40,000.
